    Childcare

The Heilbronn-Franken region has a wide variety of options for childcare, from nursery and kindergartens to in- or out-of-home daycare.

There are different childcare options for children under and above the age of 3. The cost of childcare varies and depends, among other things, on how many hours you’ll need each day. Criteria to consider before choosing a childcare facility include location, size, image, facilities, opening times, ownership (state-subsidized, religious, or privately financed), and pedagogical orientation. There is also sometimes the option of sending your children to a company-run kindergarten, if one is provided by your employer. Due to high demand for open spots, you should register your child as early as possible at the appropriate facility. Depending on the age of your child, you can choose between the following:

    Nursery

Nurseries look after children between the ages of 1 and 3. You usually have to pay for nursery care, and the number of trained professionals working there can vary according to the group size and length of time the children need to be watched. Opening hours can range from anywhere between 10 and more than 50 hours a week (all-day care).

    Kindergarten

Children can attend kindergarten from the age of 3 until their first day of elementary school. Once a child has turned 3, he or she has the legal right to a spot in a kindergarten; nevertheless, kindergartens often don’t have enough free spots to satisfy the demand. Kindergarten attendance is voluntary. Nowadays, there are many different kinds of kindergartens geared toward the individual needs of both children and parents (e.g. integrative facilities, Waldorf or Montessori schools, and focus on a second language).

    At-Home Day Care (“Tagesmutter”)

A "Tagesmutter", or private daycare provider, is a very good alternative if you prefer to have you child cared for in a family atmosphere. In this form of daycare, a trained individual looks after small groups of children (normally up to five children) from 0 to 3 years of age. The children are usually brought to the nanny’s home, but arrangements can also be made for childcare in your own home to surround your child with a trusted environment.

    Curative Education Day Care Centers

Children with disabilities (physical, mental, or psychological impairments) can be closely looked after and individually fostered in curative education day care centers until they’re ready to attend elementary school. Please contact us if you need help choosing a facility or would like support during the registration process. In addition to these childcare options, there are also other toddler groups that offer special activities and serve as a meeting place for parents and children. Some examples include play circles, baby groups, etc. These groups usually meet once a week and are a great place for meeting other parents and finding new friends.
